60048 Shop Smart-Stay Local began as a collaborative effort of local merchants, including Sue Opeka - The Present Moment, Jeff Mateer & Marti DeJon - Studio West, Lori Murphy - Murphy's Health Foods, John Timony - Curtis Frame Back Alley Gallery, and Casey Karl - MetroAlive to bring to Libertyville a buy local campaign message.  It is now a group of over 30 local merchants and businesses, and growing daily, who contribute and volunteer time and energy toward the goal of stimulating Libertyville residents to frequent the stores, restaurants and service providers in the 60048 zip code. The campaign is based on building awareness of the little-known fact that of every $100 spent with a merchant located in 60048, up to $68 of the expenditure stays in the community to support local parks, events, police and fire protection and other community services.*

According to John Timony, one of the program contributors, "We hope our message will build awareness with the residents of 60048 to think about the goods and services offered in stores of Libertyville before looking elsewhere. Events like this Holiday Stroll create a festive and fun environment to continue building that awareness."  The message was promoted during six different Libertyville events this past year, and will continue with more events throughout 2011.
